KODAK, Tenn., – The Jacksonville Suns (25-40, 54-80) routed the Tennessee Smokies (34-31, 73-61) 11-0 in the series finale Tuesday night from Smokies Stadium.
Austin Brice (W, 6-9) in his start for the Suns lasted five scoreless innings surrendering three hits while walking five and striking out six. Smokies starter Jeffry Antigua (L, 5-5) lasted four innings allowing three runs (all earned) on seven hits (one home run) while walking three and striking out six.
The scoring would begin in the top of the first, when Kenny Wilson (HR, 8) blasted a solo home run to center on the first pitch he saw, moving the Suns in front 1-0.
Flashing to the top of the fourth, Eudy Pina led off the frame with a single, to then get knocked home by Wilson’s run-scoring triple creating a 2-0-scoreboard advantage for Jacksonville. Next batter Elliot Soto then laced a RBI base knock into left that ballooned the lead to 3-0.
Moving to the fifth frame, against Smokies bullpen arm Tayler Scott, Eudy Pina manufactured a run-scoring double to right that brought home a run, and moved the Suns ahead 4-0. With runners now on second and third, Brice ripped a RBI single into left to create a 5-0 edge. Next batter Wilson, then produced a RBI single to make it to a 6-0 ballgame.
In the top of the eighth, against Smokies reliever Corey Black, Matt Juengel (HR, 17) blasted a solo home run over the left field wall to push the Suns to a 7-0 edge. In the same frame, a Wilson RBI groundout, and Soto reaching on an error scored a pair of runs making it a 9-0 contest. David Adams and Viosery Rosa both contributed run-scoring singles to push the Suns in front 11-0.
Alex Burgos tossed a scoreless sixth in relief for Jacksonville that included three strikeouts. Josh Hodges manufactured a scoreless seventh for the Suns out of the bullpen. Juancito Martinez twirled a scoreless eighth in relief for the Suns. Tyler Higgins worked the ninth inning in scoreless fashion.
The Suns and Mississippi Braves will open up the final series of the year Thursday night from Bragan Field with a first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. ET. Suns will send out left-hander Chipper Smith (3-4, 4.35 ERA) while the Braves have yet to announce their starter.
