BIRMINGHAM, Ala.– The Jacksonville Suns (24-35, 53-75) charged past the Birmingham Barons (32-26, 65-62) 10-6 Wednesday night from Regions Field.
Tyler Bremer (W, 1-0) in relief for the Suns earned the victory after four scoreless innings allowing two hits while not walking a batter and striking out four in his first double-A win. Barons starter Frankie Montas (L, 5-5) lasted three and two-thirds frames surrendering seven runs (all earned) on six hits (one home run) while walking five and striking out six.
The scoring would begin in the bottom of the first, when Birmingham’s Nicky Delmonico (HR, 3) blasted a solo home run over the center field wall, which put his club ahead 1-0.
In the top of the third Kenny Wilson led off with a walk, to then steal second base, and get driven home with two outs courtesy of Viosergy Rosa’s two-out RBI double tying the game at one. Next batter Matt Juengel then followed with a run-scoring double of his own, moving Jacksonville in front 2-1.
The Barons worked runners on the corners with nobody out in the bottom of the third. Delmonico would arch a fly ball out, which subsequently featured a throwing error to home on Suns right-fielder Eudy Pina that scored a run, and tied the game at two. Birmingham tacked on a pair of run-scoring singles generated by Christian Marrero and Brian Fletcher moving the tally to 4-2.
Flashing to the top of the fourth and the Suns cashed in with five runs. In the frame, Terrence Dayleg lined a RBI single into center, and a throwing error by Barons centerfielder Jacob May brought in another runner and knotted the contest at four. With a pair of runners on Viosergy Rosa (HR, 10) blasted a three-run home run to right, moving Jacksonville on top 7-4.
Moving to the top of the sixth, a RBI single from Terrence Dayleg and a Ryan Rieger sacrifice fly, and a run-scoring base knock off the bat of Eudy Pina leaped Jacksonville to a 10-4 scoreboard advantage.
The Barons tacked two runs in the bottom of the ninth after a RBI groundout by Jacob May, and a RBI sacrifice fly from Delmonico, making the total 10-6 in the Suns favor.
Matt Tomshaw lasted four innings allowing four runs (all earned) on eight hits while walking two and striking out four in a no decision in his start for the Suns. Lay Batista allowed two runs (both earned) while hitting three batters in relief for Jacksonville. Tyler Higgins worked a scoreless third of an inning in relief work for the Suns.
The Suns and Barons will square off in their series finale Thursday night with a first pitch set for 8:05 p.m. ET from Regions field. The Suns will send out right-hander Austin Brice (5-8, 4.88 ERA) while the Barons will counter with righty Frankie Montas (5-4, 2.49 ERA).
